Eventually, I learned that the northwest portion of Cedar Lake is closed off to the rest of the lake by fen and bog. I worked very hard through difficult wind and wave conditions to get to Poplar Point, a three hour open water paddle, only to learn that I had nowhere to go. I was totally miffed and frustrated because the crossing to the point made me damned tired. I taught myself new swear words while I struggled to find a way out. This channel seemed to be my only way out. If you look closely, youcan see the open waters of the main body of Cedar Lake. Problem was...I took this picture exactly at the spot where I could no longer go forward. The VJ was stuck in sucking mud that I would have sunk to my ears in had I got out of the kayak. I used my paddled to back out. More tears, more swearing at Cedar Lake, more hard work to find a way out.
